Conversations Matter: A Parent’s Guide to Talking About Meanness & Approval
Use these four questions to help your child understand why people are sometimes unkind—and how to respond in a healthy, confident way.
- “When someone is mean to you—online or in real life—how do you usually respond?”
Purpose: Creates space for your child to reflect on their natural reactions and emotional triggers when dealing with unkind behavior.
- “Do you think people are always trying to be hurtful, or could there be other reasons behind their words?”
Purpose: Encourages empathy and insight by introducing the idea that not all meanness is intentional or personal.
- “Which is harder for you—being laughed at, being criticized, being provoked, or dealing with someone upset with you? Why do you think that one hits you the most?”
Purpose: Helps your child identify their emotional sensitivities and where they might feel the strongest desire for approval.
- “What’s one way you could respond next time someone teases or criticizes you that would help you stay calm and confident?”
Purpose: Builds emotional resilience by helping your child plan thoughtful, composed responses to social pressure or conflict.
Remember:
Meanness happens—but how we respond makes all the difference. Kids who can stay calm and kind, even under pressure, grow stronger and more self-assured with every experience. Because in the end, Conversations Matter.
